I've noticed the past few Sundays in a row, 95 South would be backed up and the backups always start around exit 160 and make their way up to the beltway and extend all the way to Fredericksburg. Traffic reports say it's just typical congestion but why is it congested on Sunday? This is typical during rush hour ..but why on Sunday? That's a day when most people are at home. I'm just wondering if anyone here knows what the most likely reason is? Because it's summer? Weekend travelers? I would expect this on a holiday weekend but not every weekend.

It's weekend travelers. It happens every summer and goes away after Labor Day weekend.

It took me nearly 5 hours yesterday to get from DC to 295 in Richmond. It was painful! Radio guy said "typical Saturday traffic". So, I'd suspect some of that on Sunday is the return trips.

I had the bright idea to go to Virginia Beach on a Saturday morning and come back on a Sunday afternoon earlier this summer. Got to spend about 2 hours at the beach before sundown Saturday and another two could have been had at sun up Sunday but the mood was gone. Won't ever try it again.

Wrong. It may not be as bad after Labor Day, but it certainly doesn't go away. South on 95 from DC is always bad on Sunday afternoons.

When we go to Williamsburg on the weekends now and then, we never, ever drive down Saturday. We always drive down Friday night after 8pm and come home Sunday afternoon via Rt.1 at 295. Rarely hit traffic, and if we do, its trivial

Just wondering what time did you leave? I've been fitting to go to Hampton and Virginia Beach soon and leaving on a Saturday Morning would be the best option for me.

Not completely, but it is much more manageable. I live right off I-95 in Woodbridge and, in the summer, I don't even think of going to Fredericksburg or Quantico on the weekends. If I decide to go to Tyson's or someplace in that direction, I do it on Saturday morning and make sure that I am back in Woodbridge before 3PM on Saturday so I can take advantage of the HOV lanes pointing south on Saturday until that time.

Once the school systems start, the whole world opens up for me and I can again go to Fredericksburg, go to places off the beltway, etc. I'm not saying there aren't backups but they are much more manageable and easy enough to get through or around.
