Please help choosing the area. I was thinking of taking Loudoun county new single family houses, but after looking at the other thread (Loudoun versus fairfax schools).. i am in dilemma now.

Any suggested neighborhoods in fairfax county, which has better schools and can get decent single family house for around 600k?

BTW, I am in this area this weekend.. any help will be appreciated.

it really depends on where you're working, and if you have kids. please dump out more details. I would highly recommend you RENT FIRST. The area has extremely difficult traffic, which you may never see on a weekend, or may never have experienced in your life. 600k and decent are vague. Start by going to Redfin.com. Also look at your job prospects, things could change drastically, and you will be finding yourself out of the job centers and commuting further than you had expected.

The mantra here is to live as close to your work as you can afford. Traffic rules all at times. My guess is there are lots of neighborhoods with good schools with that price range. Just don't forget to consider your commuting time.

my work involves travel, so close to airport is the only requirement. I have a son (pre-school age).

OK so you're not a regular 9-5'er. You could potentially live anywhere. If you want to get more bang for your buck, SFH, newer construction and a decent sized yard: stay out of Fairfax. Your best bet is go to Prince William County: Gainesville/Haymarket/ are more affordable with good communities, but you may like Ashburn and surrounding areas. Stay out of Herndon, Sterling and Manassas. Also Warrenton is not bad either.

How large a house do you need? In N. Arlington, we're 20 minutes to Dulles and 15 to DCA--but 600 will only buy you a 3BR house under 2K sq. ft. If it's just you, your spouse, and one kid, that should be enough space.

Will you be using both airports?

Are you open to a townhouse?

I am preferring with Single family, rather than townhouse. 2k sf house would be okay if everything else is good, but i think 2500 sq ft. would be ideal. can u suggest some areas in N arlington and the schools?

Around here 7:00 am puts you in the middle of the traffic. Got to be going by 6:00 or 6:30 at latest depending on how far out you live.
