i have a job offer that I have not accepted yet, upper $50,000's. Can I realisitically live on that in that area? It seems apartments are running in the $1800-2000 a month range. I have been looking on Apartments.com can anyone be any help?

Hi,

You might want to look for rentals on craigslist.org - renting directly from an owner might be a lot less than renting through a building. I rent my beautiful McLean condo (already rented, not a plug) for $1250/month. The apartments next door are probably around $1800/month and not as luxurious. Just find someone nice as a landlord!

Anyhow, clearly the area as a whole is pricey, but that salary is nothing to be ashamed of so I think it can be done.

You can definitely live off of a salary in the high 50s. Most of the standard one-bedroom apartments in the Chantilly area actually start at around $1000/month, so I'm surprised to see those figures quoted. Assuming you want a one bedroom, $1800-2000 would seem to only be for luxury apartments. Definitely check out Craig's List.

Where in Chantilly? Near Costco?

Have no idea how much the rents are but some suggestions for apts (close to Chantilly) are: Fairlakes, Westfield, Fairfax Town ctr, or Centreville near Rt. 28/Rt. 29.
