What are good resources for finding townhouses or SFHs for rent? I have been using Trulia but it seems like there should be more listings out there. Also, should I go through an agent and what would that involve?

One good resource is militarybyowner dot com. A buyer agent can definitely help you find a rental and even "pre-screen" homes within your budget. There would be at no cost to you for his/her services. I do think that the most helpful buyer agents will be the ones experienced with the area(s) you are interested in.

Yes when working with a Realtor they can search based on your criteria and send you information on all the homes available in that area. Like the above poster stated the Realtor fees are normally covered by the Landlord. What area are you looking in?

Well I would be happy to assist you in those areas. I am heading up that way tomorrow to look at a home for a client. I work primarily in Gainesville, Bristow, Haymarket area, but do all of Northern VA. Burke is a really nice area, you can get a little bit newer home and good community feel.

I came across LiveLovely dot com recently and found it to be very helpful. Also, if you're a USAA member they show rentals in the "Home Circle" section on the website.

Padmapper is excellent. It searches craigslist and other listing sites and puts them all on a map so you can see where they are. It has an app version you can use to easily filter and view rentals on a map.

You can also try out urban igloo which pairs you up with agent so you don't really have to do anything except tell them what you are looking for.
