Hi,

My 9 year old and I would like to learn to snowboard. We have no skiing experience. Would you suggest Wintergreen over Bryce? Vice versa? Or somewhere else? I've ruled out Massanutten for learning, as I think the other two options look better.

Thanks!

Closest would be Whitetail, though I don't know how good their first-timer classes are. I know they have a kids' area.

However, having skiied and snowboarded for years, let me offer this advice: If you have just one day on the mountain, stick with skiing. You'll at least be upright, even if you're just snowplowing. With snowboarding, you'll be on your butt most or all of the first day. (The 2nd day or so, the heel/toe thing will click, and then you'll be zipping around on blue runs and doing blacks within a week.)

Liberty has a fabulous first time snowboard package. We have a place at Bryce and I took my kid to Liberty to learn to snowboard. If you can swing a weekday (worth pulling the kid out of school) you may be able to book the group lesson and be the only one there taking the class.

Once you're proficient, Bryce is a great little mountain because the kids can go by themselves.
