I am considering taking route 1 all the way to Richmond. Anyone here done something similar? Or tried taking it to Fredericksburg, etc.? Just wondering what to expect. I like to take the scenic route when possible, and 95 is hell.

You can take it after the Massaponnax
Exit, it should be pretty clear from there.

I've taken it from NOVA to Doswell (kings dominion)

after fredericksburg, it gets more rural as expected. no big deal

I know the route very well and have done it many times, because of my wife's unfortunate phobia of interstates.

From the Beltway (Woodrow Wilson Bridge), I've counted between 80 and 90 traffic lights until you reach the Massaponax exit. It's mostly continual strip-malls and commercialism all the way, very slow and ugly, except for a rural open section of winding curves near Stafford .....Then from Massaponax further south until Ashland, it's more rural and pleasant.

Or you can avoid about the first 20 traffic lights, by taking the very scenic and quick Mount Vernon Parkway from the Beltway to Mount Vernon estate, where you then bear right at the traffic circle onto Route 235 which leads onto Route 1 South again.

Same

Probably not what the OP was looking for, though.

Depends on when you are taking it. Rule of thumb though, if 95 is backed up from the mixing bowl down, you're stuck until you get to exit 126 (southern most Fredricksburg exit). Route 1 a lot of the times will mirror that with a few pockets of breathing room here and there. Especially on Friday afternoon and midday Saturday.

Route 1 to richmons Its not a bad ride without traffic.

I would disagree with the last sentence. As I said earlier, there are 80 to 90 stoplights between the Beltway and South side of Fredericksburg.
