My husband and I moved here with our three kids from Miami to live in a more diverse community, more mosques, halal places etcetera and we really like it here, the only problem is that we have not been able to find employment.

My husband’s background is 6+ years in small business management in the construction field (which is down right now due to the economy) he has been a supervisor in remodeling companies that do carpet installation, bathroom and kitchen remodeling, you get the idea. He speaks English, Arabic and Spanish fluently. Basically he is looking for something close by where he can make 37k+.

I on the other hand need a job from home. I have 5+ years in office management and also have experience in advertising and marketing. If there is a company that can afford to hire a dependable administrative assistant for example or needs any other kind of executive assignments that I can do from home please let me know.

Please hire us?

Extremely desperate Mom,
Lina

Well, certainly check the Washington Post, and there's always monster.com and the like. You could also look for employment agencies in the yellow pages...also temp agencies if you need to bring in some cash fast. Temping can be a good way to get in the door and make an impression...

I agree on temp agencies- I went that route during college and was offered full-time jobs - it's a great trial period for a company so if they pay some fee for hiring a temp- it's minimal compared to trying to find an employee and not knowing if they would work out.. good luck!

Have you networked through your mosque and let you needs be known there? Also, is your husband fluent in written as well as oral Arabic and Spanish? Maybe he could get a translation job. He probably isn't going to find anything in the building or remodeling field right now because they have been laying people off, not hiring. Check the local weekly newspapers, such as the Connection. (These are available for free at the libraries and government centers.) They have a lot of help-wanted ads that are targeted toward the specific communities they serve. Also, be open-minded to the possibility of getting an office job yourself while your husband stays home with the children until he finds something. It may not be what you prefer for the long-term but you could do it for a while. Don't limit yourselves to what you have already done, but consider how your skills could be applied in different ways. Good luck to you.

Since you have a background in marketing I would suggest checking out Aquent (Aquent : The talent agency for designers and marketers). They are an international talent/temp agency for marketing and design professionals. I am currently working on a local contractor assignment that is renewed annually, and working full-time from home. Not all opportunities have this option, but it would be a great place to start.

another option, since he speaks arabic, and i know this isn't an option for everyone, but he could get a contractor job somewhere "over there" and be gone a year and make over $100k. $80k taxfree anything over that gets taxed (depending on who he goes through).

Go to the Chamber of Commerce websites as well, they normally have jobs listed. Good luck!

If he has a clean record and doesn't have a suspect past, DoD could always use people that speak Arabic. Try usajobs.gov or dia.gov. Being fluent in Arabic would make him very valuable.

How are you guys making it without jobs and three kids? I feel for you. When I lived in NOVA, I had to live at home, and I was supporting myself.
