I was surpised to see an article in USA Today yesterday about pedestrian safety. It cited a study by the Surface Transportation Policy Partnership which said Virginia's pedestrian safety is higher than most states. The DC metro area also gets good ratings compared to most other cities.

We aren't #1, but we're much higher on the list than I expected to be considering how bad our traffic is. IMO, that says a lot about our sidewalks, bike lanes and condition of our roads.

Two particularly thought provoking stats:

Percent of Roads in Poor Condition:
US: 5.8%
Virginia: 2.3%

Pedestrian Fatalities per 100,000 people
US: 1.26
Virginia: 1.07
