Possibly moving to Fairfax in a few months to start a new job, and looking for suggestions on good areas to rent. Just the two of us, and not too much need for space. A typical 2-bedroom townhouse/apartment (or 1 + office) would suffice. Figure a $1,200 range give or take, and would rather pay a little more than end up in an unsafe neighborhood. Job would be in Fairfax city and would not mind a reasonable commute if there are savings to be had in a less pricey area (provided all other criteria are met). Schools unimportant for now, and neither is public transportation. Thanks!

Is night life important to you? If it's not high on your list, than the Fair Lakes, Fairfax Corner and Fair Oaks sections of Fairfax might work. They're very safe areas, lots of shopping, and a super easy commute to Fairfax City.

Your price range is on the low side, though. I think you're looking at least $1500 for a nice 2 bed in that area. (Though you might find a deal on Craigslist.)

The Ellipse at Government Center is right in your price range and a block from Wegmans.

Here is a good write-up on them:

Ellipse at Government Center - From the Starbucks at Lee Plaza shopping center you wonder, "Where is it?" Across the street, behind a stand of tall trees, the Ellipse at Government Center's concealment underscores a key benefit of this community: Pri

Be sure to check recent statistics. A few years back, they were plagued by wannabe hoodlums from the high school breaking in as they walked home/skipped school. That may be a thing of the past now, as the folks I know who lived there moved out of the area about six years ago.

We were there last summer and it wasn't bad.
