I'm in the Information Technology Project Management field and have been told that employment opportunities in NOVA are plentiful. My kids are in college so I don't have to worry about living in a neighborhood with the best k-12 schools. I'm looking for a city that has character. Where can I find a vibrant city with boutiques, eateries, etc where I don't have to drive to everything? The neighborhood would have to be diverse in age, race and ethnicity. I make over $100k a year and only want to rent. My budget for a 2 bedroom rental is $1800 a month. The area must also be dog friendly and have a gym within 20 minutes. A Whole Food's grocery store rounds out my wish list. Is there such a place? Also, I am self-employed and work remote so public transportation is desired but not critical at this point. Thanks in advance for your help.

Bingo!

There are two areas that you may like. One is the Carlyle neighborhood, an area of high-rise apts and condos towards the west end of Old Town. There are two Metro stations (King Street or Eisenhower Avenue) within walking distance. A Whole Foods market is close-by. Restaurant options are kinda limited right in Carlyle but the rest of Old Town is close enough.

On the eastern end, closer to the waterfront, you may be able to rent out one of the many condos in the area. You would be closer to all the attractions you seek. It would be a short bus ride or invigorating walk to the closest Metro station (likely King Street, maybe Braddock Road).

Old Town provides a laid-back yet active and upscale environment that tends to appeal to those in their thirties on up. You should fit in just fine.

Excellent! I also meant to mention that Old Town is very dog-friendly... to the point that many businesses have water dishes outside their doors. There are a few pet-oriented boutique stores in the area as well.

Old Town has festivals, parades, art shows, and other outdoor activities, as well as a farmers' market on Saturday mornings. The waterfront is great to walk along and you'll find all sorts of restaurants.

Old Town sounds like a perfect fit, but I think $1800 is going to be a little low to be in the heart of it all.

Mmm, not necessarily. Granted, there may be more choices above $2000 but $1800 is definitely doable... especially if she chooses to rent from a condo owner.

Thanks again for all the feedback. Any advice on where, besides Craigslist, to find condo/apartment rentals?
