I need to buy a portable AC unit for my bedroom. At the very least it needs to cool my bedroom (about 14 x 12) but I'd really appreciate it more if it would be able to send some of that cool air into the other 2 bedrooms on the same floor (about 10 x 11).

Money is a factor unfortunately...

Does anyone have any companies they'd recommend? Preferably one that is open on Saturdays.

Brands to check out or avoid? etc...

(I do have a Sears credit card if that would get me a discount or if they have good brands)

By portable, do you mean a window unit? We have Sears Kenmore "Plasmaire" units that came with our house when we bought it last year, but the units were new. They are Energy Star, and pretty effective. We have three in our 1200 sq ft house. I can't comment on installation because we did not do the install ourself. We also have several Vornado fans around the house to keep the cool air circulating and a big one in the bedroom which we run in conjunction with the AC unit to keep usage down (i.e., not have to set the temperature as low).

It would be cheaper and more effective to get a window unit. You still need a window for a portable, because the hot air has to go somewhere, also you need to empty the resevoir or it will stop, whereas a window unit leaks outside. Portables are more expensive than window units too..

Yes, I'd like to know if you mean window unit or those standing units that vent out via window tube. I have experience with the standing units.

Window or through-the-wall units are much better than the portable units, in terms of cooling, and efficiency. The portables can cycle on and on and on, and not achieve the temperature that you desire, whereas a window/wall unit can efficiently manage the temperature.

For a large window A/C, some of the Kenmore units (Sears) are rated well. The July 2010 Consumer Reports has a list of some good window A/C units. Look for a unit that has the ability to maintain a set temperature and is Energy Star certified. Both of those features will help to save you money on the cost to run the unit.

The newer portables do not require a window for drainage.

but they require a window to direct the heat out. They don't use windows for drainage anyways. The drainage goes to a resevoir, and if it's full, the unit shuts off until you empty it.
