Just wondering how many weeks ahead of time I should plan my visit to look for a rental on Oahu. I'll probably look to rent a 1 bdr anywhere between down town and diamond head and possibly Kailua area.

I would say 1 to 2 months out would be good. Any longer than that, and the management companies won't know what might be available at the time you need to move in. Most know at least 1 month out that a tenant is going to be leaving, sometimes a little more.

in average is one month. They're only willing to entertain you 2 months ahead if you secure them a deposit but you wouldn't want to pay anything before you see the the place in person. I have signed a contract 2 months early *after we viewed the apartment*, only because we were already living here in temporary lodging.

Hawaii tennant law states you have to give 28 days notice. So, they know a unit will be available about a month in advance.

+1 on seeing the place in person. There were a couple places that looked good by seeing pics, but were scary in person.

Don't ever rent anything (long term) sight unseen. Arrange to stay in a hotel or vacation rental for a couple of weeks while you look in person at some that you've lined up ahead of time.

Also, there are vacation rentals you can stay at for a while when you look for a place. There are also a couple hotels in Waikiki that are not nice, but less than $100 a night (Castle Ocean Resort I know for sure is that low).
