I am a substance abuse counselor and am considering moving to Portsmouth. I don't know much about it except there are lots of drugs and a very strong recovery community. Can you tell me some more about it?

Portsmouth is remote and not a very strong economy. At least two hours to Cincinnati and Columbus. Very beautiful countryside but the opioid crisis has hit Appalachian Ohio and Kentucky very hard. I for one would re consider wanting to live in Scioto County.

Ashland, KY and Huntington, WV would provide better economic opportunities than Portsmouth.

There's a slight resurgence of the steel industry between Portsmouth and Ironton, but compared to the number of people who lost their jobs in the last few decades, it's just a drop in the bucket. If it has a strong recovery community, they probably need more help than they have.

And no doubt fewer resources to pay for that help.

I'd spend an awful lot of time investigating the job market and everything else before moving to Portsmouth.

I would consider any of the larger cities: Cinci, Columbus, Cleveland, Pittsburgh. All have opiod crisis centers along with extensive social service agencies with jobs available.
