They may prefer working at a cvs over a burger king, mcdonalds, etc. I bet your the type that protests every new walmart! Yet I know people that work there and make a good living. Cvs, like walmart, has a lot of low paid positions, but they also offer some higher paid positions.

Now something like this is worth saving

Yes, the comment about the Joslyn Castle was intended to be a sort of slippery slope joke. But, I think the logic still applies. Just because the 49r is not as pleasing to the eye does not mean it is without character. I am yet to be in a CVS with any character and wish people would stop supporting exportation of suburban landscapes into the city. This is a very small scale example of what happened with Jobbers Canyon. People thought the old buildings were stupid and ugly. They wanted the big corporation to stay in their town, so they let the big corporation tear down the buildings. CVS is likely, despite their threats, to simply relocate somewhere else in the area. They are likely interested in the space so that they can compete directly with the Walgreens on Saddlecreek and have probably done market research for the area showing a profit can be made.

I have to disagree with that statement completely. Jobbers canyon contained many architecturally important building. While a few of them were simply brick boxes and could have been tore down with little loss to the history of the city, some were quite beautiful and historically significant. The 49er bar is your standard box that can be rebuilt just about anywhere in the city. Also unless the building in on the 'national register of historic places' it really can not be compared along side jobbers canyon in any way.

The rationale being used is identical: old buildings, not being fully used, tear them down and replace with suburban buildings. I would actually argue that the 49er is historically and culturally significant to Omaha and certainly to Dundee. Also, there are many significant and historic buildings in Omaha that are not on the national register. I live in one and I work in one. Just because a building is not on the register does not mean that it cant be compared to a building that is on the register. I think you should look into the politics and subjectivity that go into getting something on the register. Obviously we have different asthetic values and value different things in a neighborhood - we will have to agree to disagree.
