We are planning to move from San Francisco Bay area to Omaha, in the very near future, and need to find out as much as we can about the schools in Omaha, for our two boys?
Any and all assistance/help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What are the academically highest (hopefully non-denominational) middle and high schools in Omaha, public and private?

  • How do they rank with the other schools in Omaha?

  • Are there any gifted schools in Omaha?

Everything you need to know about the Public schools in the area is right here... Omaha.com schools report | The pulse of public education in Douglas, Sarpy and Lancaster CountiesOmaha.com Schools Report

For a private secular school, try Brownell-Talbot School

OPS has a lot of bad schools. If you want public schools try Millard, Elkhorn, or Papillion.

According to the numbers, it is. Not sure what else to judge it on.

Omaha is unique in that you can live in one school district and enroll your kids in another if the school has room. They call it the "Learning Community."

OPS is decent when you compare it to schools in other metro areas. When you compare OPS to Millard or Elkhorn, it probably lingers behind them somewhat.

Millard is very week in the art department. Elementary schools do not even have art teachers -- they have a roving art instructor that visits each school a couple of times a year. All students make pretty much the exact same artwork when she visits. They are supposed to be very good with music, though.

Millard offers the most AP tests of any district and the students are very successful when it comes to the advanced classes.

Elkhorn is okay but it is growing so rapidly that the infrastructure is having trouble keeping up. Most of the crowding is at the elementary school level, though. They have a beautiful new high school and a great new middle school -- so if you want shiny, new schools with lots of windows and new technology, look at Elkhorn south.

Westside is also very good. Ralston is ok. Papillion/LaVista is okay too.

Where did you end up sending your boys? What are your impressions of Omaha? I am also moving from SF next summer and have two children--having trouble to decide on the schools.

Kids today are competing with kids from India, Singapore, and Hong Kong. On a global scale, OPS is a total embarrassment.

Thank you for once again posting a comment that is irrelevant to the question asked and needlessly bashes our great city. I'm sure the posters here seeking guidance are very grateful for your contribution.
