My husband just accepted a job in Omaha and we're scrambling to find a home to rent while we get the feel of the area and figure out if we want to buy. We've lived on land most of our lives, and finally escaping the concrete jungle of Las Vegas after a one=year term of misery, we were thrilled at first to have gotten a job in the midwest. (We're originally from Colorado) But we've had no luck at all finding a house in the country. Ideally, we'd like about 5 acres, more or less within an hour or so of Omaha. And we need a 4 bedroom house, as we have a big family.... But we've searched every search engine that exists on the internet and have found almost nothing! We've been really surprised that it's been such a problem! Is there something we don't know? Are there just not many rural rentals? Or is there somewhere to look that I'm not looking?

Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated! It's the end of August and my husband starts work the second week of September. We're running out of time and realllly don't want to live in the suburbs!

Beyond the suburbs, it turns to corn farming for pretty much the whole state.

Homes fitting your criteria are going to be few and far between within the city limits. You might be able to find something in the outer suburbs like Bennington, and even along the outskirts of Council Bluffs on the Iowa side though.

Your best bet would probably be to contact realtors in the Omaha area and get their recommendations.

Not impossible----have you thought about hooking up with a realty company that also does leasing? Call around.

IN omaha, no. By definition if it's in omaha it's not rural. At the least it would be suburban. Now outside of omaha, I am sure you can find something. Check the local papers or even sites like for rent, or apartments dot com.
