I recently moved to Nebraska and currently live in Bellevue but would like to Omaha. I am looking at a place around 28th and Martha. I drove by and some of the houses looked nice, some not so nice. Is this an okay area? I mean realitively look crime and things?

sorry. thats the crime center. If you wanna talk gangs, you practically just hit the bullseye. I'd love to see ya move in and help turn the area around, but starting off, no its not a great location for safety at least in comparison to the rest of the city.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I'd actually think of 30th St as more of the epicenter of gang activity, but 28th is still pretty bad from what I recall.

I'd hardly call living there taking your life into your hands. It's not 180th and Dodge but it's not Baghdad either.

I'm not sure 28th Martha is the "epicenter" for gangs so much, but there is a drug/crime problem in that area.

Coming from Bellevue, you are going backwards moving to that area. I would look more toward midtown.

Are midtown homes more expensive?

Property values do follow quality of neighborhoods, so I would say yes. Generally, they may be a bit more expensive.

However, I would never consider buying any property in a crime ridden area a good investment. I would recommend areas around 42nd Leavenworth for decent home prices in relatively quiet areas.

Last fall, while I was at work, an old drunk guy came in through our back door while my wife and frandsons were having lunch. I figured it was an isolated incident. We have lived in our home since 1978. We raised our kids here with no problems and now our kids children.

Last month, I got a call from my grandson school that he forgot his violin. I ran it up to Castelar School, and put off getting fuel. I am glad I did. I returned home. The back door was unlocked , as I had planned on doing some outdoor cleaning. It was a nice day...I heard the back door open. I thought it was my daughter. My wife and toodler grandson were napping. I went into the kitchen and found two young hispanic males standing there and we looked at each other. I asked them what the they were doing in my house! One guy said he wanted to "use the phone." I directed them firmly to get out. They complied. To make a long story short, a few minutes later the gang unit and othet officers had surrounded my house. They were apprehended. They had just robbed a store on 19th and Vinton. Times sure have changed.

We are not quite at 28th and Martha, but south of 20th and Martha.
