Probably cheaper and better to buy a new laptop. The prices are cheap these days for a decent laptop.

I don't think it's gonna work. Motherboard repair is useless it will work for a while but after few days you will have the same problem so it's better to get new one if you can but don't go to repair it.

Before jumping to any conclusions and throwing in the towel ... what make and model is this laptop? If it's a model affected by the nVidia chips (as seen on this list), then you may be able to file a claim for repair or replacement.

Otherwise, there are companies out there that repair motherboards, but none I know in SoCal, and they won't be cheap because of the equipment and labor involved. It's often cheaper to replace with a used/tested one from a parted-out laptop, or in some cases, even new from the manufacturer.

A motherboard repair will probably cost a few hundred minimum and you end up with the same old laptop.

Examples of deals available under $500

HP 620 XT964UT Notebook PC - Intel Core 2 Duo T6670 2.2GHz, 2GB DDR3, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 15.6" Display, Windows 7 Professional 32-bit

Acer Aspire AS7741Z-5731 LX.PY902.001 Refurbished Notebook PC - Intel Pentium P6000 1.86GHz, 3GB DDR3, 250GB HDD, DVDRW, 17.3" TFT, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

Repairing a motherboard is out of the question. It is physically almost impossible to do.

But replacing one isn't such a difficult or expensive idea. Replacement motherboards for laptops are commonly available on ebay and other places. If the contents of the laptop as is are important to the OP, laptop repair places can replace the motherboard for the cost of a board (~$100-150) plus labor.
