I'm moving to OC next week from Nebraska, and I know I need to get a smog test, but don't know much about it, or how much it's going to cost me. Can anyone explain what I need to do, or offer any suggestions as to where I should go? I live off of E. Ball and S. Sunkist in Anaheim and drive a 2008 Nissan Versa, so I'm not worried about serious emission problems.

cost maybe 35$? I don't remember, but it's not outrageous. You'll probably need to find a "Smog Test Only" place. They're all over, really. Here's the search tool from the CA DMV. As far as details, they hook your car up to a machine and run it in the garage for a few minutes and give you a printout. They electronically submit your pass/fail grade to the DMV.

Find a coupon from pennysavers and then the yellow pages (or online). Call the closest smog location and tell them what your coupon is and they usually match it. You have to be careful, Usually the price is $29, plus $8 for DMV electronic transfer fee. Warm the car up well before the test to increase chances of passing.

I thought the emissions requirement only kicked in if the vehicle was older than 4 years. So, beginning 2013, you would need it to register your vehicle but perhaps since your are out of state it might be different?
Also, if I am not mistaken, expect to pay around $60 for the test plus the cert but this would take care of your emissions requirements for 2 years so you wouldn't have to do it for another 2 years...

You need to look under the hood for a 50 State sticker. If you have a 49 State sticker you're hosed.

This was true up till 1995. CA reversed the law on that. I got a refund for a Jeep that they charged a additional $200 fee for not having the sticker.
