Was just wondering if anyone ever made the drive from Portland to Vancouver, BC. I'd love to visit Canada on vacation and it seems like a short drive (according to mapquest about 5 1/2 hours). Is it easy enough to drive around Vancouver? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

it is a beautiful drive. however you have to time the trip with regards to seattle and the border crossing. traffic in seattle can bog the trip down and if the border crossing is backed up, it can take an hour to get through. my average wait at the border was usually only 10-20 minutes. once in canada, it is an easy drive into vancouver. see stanley park, absolutely amazing.

I have done the drive and I did it in 5 hours including crossing the boarder. On the way back to the states though I had to wait at the boarder for 2 1/2 hours, but it was also a holiday weekend. I think it is totally worth it and if you can you should drive on over to Whistler. Vancouver is one of the most beautiful cities I have ever seen and I had no problems driving around.

I always use the border crossing at Aldergrove/Lynden instead of either of the crossings at Blaine. It's a lot more relaxed. You just take exit 256A to Highway 539 in Bellingham, instead of continuing north on I-5. The difference in distance to downtown Vancouver is about three miles between the two routes.

I've done this drive few times already, and it can take anywhere from 5.5 to 7.5 hours. Like everyone said, the dependency is on Seattle traffic and the border. The HOV lane in Seattle does help (so don't go alone) and try to avoid rush hour traffic. The border stop can be few minutes to 2 hours, no way to tell. The same story is on the way back.

It's an enjoyable drive and Vancouver is definitely worth the visit. I've also found the city to be pretty easy to drive around.
