Why do people in Orlando ask "Where do you stay?" instead of "Where do you live?"

I've never heard the "Where do you stay" phrase/question but have found typically it's used by a more urban demographic. I would guess it's more a case of who you know/where you've been situation versus an overall "Orlando thing".

I actually say that myself. I guess because when you ask people "where do you live?" People tand to respond "here" meaning the central Florida area. But when you ask where do you stay? For some reason people tend to be more specific. I don't know why, I wouldn't say its an Orlando thing but I do hear it more often here.

I've never heard it asked that way before. I usually ask: "What area do you live in?", just because the metro is compiled of so many different neighborhoods.

I have heard that phrase in NYC, so it is not only in Orlando.

Maybe they're asking which hotel you're staying in because they think everybody in Orlando is only on vacation here .

Where do you stay - Hey I'm trying to have a friendly conversation but don't want to be too forward because I don't know you that well

Where do you live - Whoa there slow down...why do you wanna know where I live?

I've never heard it phrased that way.

If someone asks me where I live, I give them the name of the town. No big deal. It's not like I'm giving out my address. I guess if I lived in Intercession City or some other really small area I might respond a little more vaguely.

Agreed, I also use the phrase for this reason as well. It just sounds more casual and less intrusive and personal.

Where do you stay implies that you assume someone is a tourist. I'd be rather offended if someone assumed that about me, even though I've got a pronounced Northeastern accent. (Blend of New England and NYC metro that isn't really discernible as one or the other unless you are from one or the other--in which case you'll think I'm from where you aren't. )
