About 30 miles NW of Orlando. Direct hit from Charley. Seeing the eye was a neat experience, but the rest was nothing I want to see again: massive storm, extremely high winds (I remember stepping outside, just for fun, and literally being pushed around by the wind. Could barely walk), **** flying around everywhere. Then came Frances, who loomed over us for what I believe was 3 or 4 full days. Knocked power for quite a while and spawned some tornadoes that ended up killing I believe a solid 2 dozen people in the Leesburg area. Not fun.

Houses were crushed by trees near me. Trees came down on one road and about 24 power poles and lines with them. I lost 100 year old oak tree. Luckily it fell away from the house. It was a mess and not fun

I lived right around the corner from Universal. We were on the 1st floor of an apartment building and water came in near the window and soaked the carpet about two feet out. Downed powerlines and trees all around Dr. Phillips. Saw a bunch of pool screens destroyed, roofs damaged... It was a mess, but we didn't lose power for very long, maybe a couple hours.

Is there such a thing as a 'hurricane proof' house? I see people buying plywood, and putting those in the windows, etc. Any other precautions people must take in events like these? Besides the usual buying plenty of supplies, etc.

Are Orlando residents required to evacuate the area as well?

It helps if your trusses are tied together with Simpson Strong Ties. Simpson Strong-Tie - *The Home Depot

Also if your garage overhead door is not hurricane rated a metal beam attached to the floor and attached above the door is a good idea. The garage door is attached to the beam with U-bolts. All Florida Hurricane Depot - Secure Door Garage Door Brace Hurricane Protection DIY or Installed

Covering window opens with 3/4" plywood will keep the debris from hitting/breaking windows. The home centers also have metal corrugated panels that can be secured over window openings. They overlap. Much lighter than plywood and stronger.

Make sure the homes doors are well secured against blowing in.
