My husband has the opportunity to take a job in Lakeland Florida. We are a family of five with three kids. My oldest would be going into high school, my middle child would be going into 7th grade and my youngest into 5th grade. Good Schools are the most important to us and obviously safe and low crime. My husband would like to have no more than a 30 minutes commute.

We would like a 4 bedroom home, on the new side, as we don’t have time to fix up a house. My kids are into baseball and my oldest into theatre. I personally would love a small town with a “downtown” area where you can walk to restaurants, small shops or something.

I don’t even know where to begin to look for a home or town to reside in.

Help!!!

You might need to have a good conversation with your husband about his commute as Lakeland (or Polk County for that matter) isn't known for it's school quality. If you or better yet he can deal with a longer commute of around 45 minutes, the Fishhawk Ranch community in neighboring Hillsborough County offers very good quality schools at all grade levels, is very safe/low crime and is a terrific place for kids in terms of activities. Sadly there just isn't that type of walkable community that fulfills the criteria you've set.

Fish Hawk has been recommended to me before. I hear the schools are better and I do like the idea of not having to pay for private schools or praying on a lottery for charter school.

What is near Fish Hawk? You say there’s no downtown area. Is anything close? Shopping? Restaurants?

Since your oldest is into theatre, you might want to look into Harrison School of the Arts in Lakeland. Not sure about other schools there but I’ve heard good things about that one.

There's plenty nearby in terms of shopping and restaurants. There's a nice Publix, Fresh Market and Walgreen's in close proximity as well as restaurants like Outback and Beef O'Brady's as well as dozen or so other chains/independents in close proximity. For retail options there's a couple of shopping centers nearby with stores like Beall and Steinmart, plus there's Westfield Mall in Brandon about 20 minutes away that has all the stores you could need otherwise.

You could live in Lakeland Highlands... Not all of Lakeland is bad. That side of town is VERY nice.

The schools however are average at best.

I’m looking into Lakeland Highlands. I hear the George Jenkins High school isn’t that bad. But I have yet to find a nice development in that school district. We’d prefer a development with a pool and some amenities, if possible.

Any thoughts?

Eaglebrook.

My mom and sister used to live there. I used to visit them every weekend. I miss going there. Beautiful neighborhood.

Is there a community pool? I looked at this and couldn’t find any information!

Any input on the schools?
