Hey everyone!

I am in the home buying process, and Oviedo seems like a good option in terms of prices and school district, but I will be commuting to Altamonte for work. I work in a hospital, so I will have early hours (have to be there at 7 am and will leave prior to 5 pm) and won’t typically be commuting during peak traffic times. With that in mind, is Oviedo a good option? I see most homes are about 25-30 min away, but is that going to be significantly longer with traffic? I’m also considering Lake Mary, Winter Springs, Longwood, and Sanford, but Oviedo seems to have the best rated schools.

Thanks so much for the help!

Traffic in/out of Oviedo that requires east-west commutes is usually pretty bad, although all in all not terrible given the distance required if looking at Advent Health-Altamonte for instance. The quickest route from most of Oviedo would involve SR434 to SR427 or Palm Springs Drive south to SR436. It would average around 30 minutes and is just 13 miles. Red Bug Road to SR436 is another option, however Red Bug is always seemingly bumper to bumper with lots of braking and takes as long or longer saving just a little over a mile with lots more aggravation.

I would also suggest looking at neighborhoods within 30 minutes of work and gauging the area/amenities versus simply schools as there is little drop-off from Oviedo schools to those in Lake Mary, Sanford and Longwood for instance. Oviedo is less economically diverse than the others, which unfortunately affects educational outcomes in some instances. So in other words, it's not so much more about superior educators and administration.

For commute times refer to google maps with live traffic on. People are horrible at estimating times, some overestimate others underestimate, some people still live in the 1980s and don’t use their “secret” routes which are often much longer. Check the ETA at the time you would be leaving your house.

The timeframe I utilized was via Google Maps using 6:15am for a departure time and 4:00pm in the afternoon..
