Strokes effect people in many different ways. I'll always be curious about those who have strokes, leaving them with a one-word vocabulary. And many of these people go on and live for many years after their stroke.

I've attended to two of them in my days at work. One man, every question you asked him, he replied with his last name. Another woman, the only word she spoke was Beddy. How are you today? Beddy. What are you watching on TV? Beddy. How was your dinner? Beddy, Beddy!

Always curious why they were left with that particular word, and I'm sure it wasn't their choice.

The question: If you had a stroke that effected you this way, and you'd be stuck with a one-word vocabulary, what word would you hope it would be, and not be?

Myself, the word help might leave me helpless, as after saying it a hundred times, they'd come to ignore me whether I needed help or not.

My top pick: painful. Then, hopefully they'd keep giving me more and more pain meds, to the point I wouldn't know if I were on Planet Earth or Neptune.

That is heartbreaking.

How sad.

If I had to choose just one word it would be either "chocolate" or "pizza"......one is as good as the other.

Have you really thought this one through?

You're eagerly awaiting your pain medication, nurse comes in with your pills, and what do you say? And out the door she goes!

You're hungry, the nurse's aide comes in with your bedside tray of lunch or dinner, and it appalls you, the sight of it. And the aide asks you if you'd prefer the alternate meal (most nursing homes offer an alternative meal).
And what do you say?

The aide comes in and announces you have a visitor. And what do you say, as the visitor peeks his head in and says: I'll just come another day!

Well, as scary as a prospect as this is, as one of my grandmothers currently exists about like this, as do two of my great-uncles, which just makes me hope and pray I missed out on that piece of the genetic pool, but who knows............

I would choose a word like love, because I think it would help make me and the people around me more comfortable and happy.
