Not all of our readers live in climates where temps get below freezing, but this Tip is timely for those who are in Polar Bear City these days.
If the lock to your car, house or shed is frozen, here's a quick Tip for de-icing the lock so you can be on your merry way. Simply put some hand sanitizer gel on the key and the lock. Then gently insert the key, and the ice crystals should give way and loosen up the lock.
The main ingredient in hand sanitizer is alcohol, which is the same as in commercial de-icers. Check the label of your hand sanitizer to make sure it's 60% alcohol, which is the norm. If the percentage of alcohol is less than that, it may not work.
Since we are having another record-cold day (it was -9F when I got up this morning), this seemed like a good and timely Tip for those of us who have been experience freezing temps and tons of snow for the past several weeks.

Great Tip Pam... For those who have never lived were it's bitter cold or for the new driver that has never driven in bitter cold... DO NOT throw a pan full of boiling water on your windshield to remove the snow or ice.. it will shatter the windshield
Well I needed that tip the day of the blizzard about two weeks ago. The only way in my car around 4am at work was through the hatch back. I crawled in over the seats and got stuck upside down when the hatch back closed trapping my foot between the seat and the hatchback. Every thing is hysterically funny when you're that tired and it took me several minutes to get free and get into the drivers seat. I started my car and realized that I was trapped inside. I had to call the supervisor to tell her that I was trapped and someone needed to check on my patients for me. It took 15 minutes for the locks to thaw and I needed to move my car so they could plow that area. I also had to be back at work at 3pm that same day. That was one adventure I could do with out. I'll remember that tip Pam.
