Someone please shed some light! Why do people say this??
When asked a question, in any sense but especially a professional environment, when asked a question you do not understand, please for the love of all things holy, do not respond with "Do what?"
I am not sure where this came from, but I hear it so much! Sometimes people don't hear you, but even when they do, it's as if it's automatic.
If this bothers you...you're in for a big awakening in the real world.
The issue here is that I have been one of the leaders in the "real world" for far too long, and in a professional environment, it is unbelievingly inappropriate and ridiculous. I do not talk like that. Just asking for some perspective-not a freaking judgment on my personality.

Well your location shows Austin....I'd guess you're not from Texas! "Say What" would have been my first response to the ridiculously overblown OP.
This is what you hear in your professional environment? Say What??

Perhaps a better explanation of what you want is required. If you hear "Do what" all the time maybe it's because no one can figure out what it is you are saying.

I hear it here in Oklahoma. I don't know about the professional setting, but it appears to be mainly said by people from small towns. And primarily by whites. I never heard it before I came to this part of the state. It is only annoying when a certain person says it, so that tells me I am more likely annoyed by that person, than by anyone who says it.
I thought it was funny at first. Now, I am used to it.
