When I was a girl, three drug stores in my home town had lunch counters: Walgreen's, Rexall Drugs, and Vann's Drugs. Though I was young, I remember people sitting up at the lunch counters on stools that swiveled, and ordering lunch. It was nice, because you could always strike up a conversation with someone sitting close by. My parents, who were on a budget, never took us to eat at those counters.
They disappeared by about 1970 or so.
Sommer's I mentioned were actually Sommer's Rexall Drug Stores. Rexall must have been the chain (franchise) name.
I'd give alot to be able to get a really good fountain soda. They could serve the Soda stronger and ad things like Vanilla or cherry even chocolate flavorings. I loved vanilla cokes.

More than once my mom had to yell at me to stop spinning in circles on the stool. The other thing us kids just could not resist doing was blowing the paper wrapper off of the straw.

I still blow the straw covers at the gkids. I'm just a big kid myself.
