Greetings, kids! Scroll on down for Today's Tip.

LAWN CARE HINTS

Now that summer weather is here for much of our audience, here are a couple of hints which can help you maintain a healthy lawn.
  • Don't let thatch build up on your lawn. Thatch can prevent your lawn from getting the fresh air and nutrients that it needs to grow lush and full. Here's an article on thatch, in case you don't know what it is: Managing Thatch in Lawns — Center for Turfgrass Science — Penn State University The easiest way to get rid of thatch is to rake your lawn with a stiff wire rake like the one pictured above.
  • Remember not to cut your grass too short! Lots of people make this mistake because they don't want to mow as often. However, if your lawn is too short, it can easily be burned out by the sun and also will not hold moisture well. Cut it a little longer and you'll be rewarded by a greener, healthier lawn.

I do cut my grass shorter than I used to but mainly because it's patchy. The summers are so hot and with constant droughts it's hard to maintain a decent lawn. Leaving your grass longer is definitely a great tip Pam!

Lawns require lots of work, water and fertilizer to look good all the time. I'm happy my yard is full of rocks. It's too hard in the desert to grow grass.

Great tips PJ, for a city lawn!

Here, mine's lucky to get mowed at all as it takes many mornings before it heats up just to get that done... the mower also mulches so no raking & bagging required.

Great to see you and your tips back, btw!

Thanks for adding another job to my 'to do list' Pam.

Not much chance of burned out grass here at the moment.

Great tips, Pam.

I've been attacking my lawn with gusto, it's now at a point that I can leave it to grow a bit longer.

Lawn scarification also gets rid of many turf weeds.

Haven't had to mow a lawn in years, but back in the day I had a mower that could be set a certain height off the ground. I'd set mine to high to ensure I didn't cut it too short. Now I'm in the land of machetes and weedwhackers so not an issue - well, except when the guys get a little overzealous with their whacking
