Where were you looking?! We went to a Halloween party store last week and while yes, there were several inappropriate costumes, my kids had lots of appropriate choices to choose from as well
The place we went had 2 walls of costumes: One for little kids (up to age 9 or 10) and the other was teens/adults. The kids stuff was adorable and fun. The teen/adult wall (the female section) was about 97% inappropriate. Very sad.
I think next year, I'll hit up Goodwill and put together something for her. Or she can wear the one she purchased this year!
Okay, I'm sure this happens every year but this year, I must have taken extra notice.
This afternoon, I take my DD12 to the party store to get her Halloween stuff. She doesn't fit into the kiddie costumes anymore, so we have to get something from Juniors or Womens..... Sheesh!! When did Halloween become "free pass to dress like a **** day"???????????????? Darn near every costume was shorter than short on the bottom, lower than low on the top, with the requisite fishnet stockings and, of course, the model on the package had spike heels or stripper platforms on.
Thankfully, we found something age-appropriate (after a 30 minute search), but why is it that these companies target this crap at women/teen girls??? None of the teen boy or men's costumes were revealing in any way ---- cop uniform, army, scream, rock star, ketchup/mustard jar, etc. Why do they think women/teen girls have to dress as subservient skanks on a holiday that's supposed to be fun?
What is lower than low? Higher than high? Shorter than short?
I'm sure they ARE market driven, but it's part of a parent's job to set some limits. A preteen girl doesn't need to look "saucy" (a favorite descriptive word) and a lingerie-style, low-cut, lace-up corset bodice.
Check out the girl wearing this Goldilocks outfit. It's described as "all grown up."
Girls will have plenty of time to wear this kind of stuff when they're older (and old enough to know what they're doing and make an informed decision about what they're wearing and what message it may be sending)
There obviously is a market for this sort of thing, but that doesn't mean that companies need to sell it. I wouldn't want to work for a company that based its business strategy on pushing overt sexiness on young girls.
In 1986 my sister was a genie. She had a costume very similar to that of Barbara Eden on the old "I Dream of Jeannie" show.
You know, the outfit that so many found so sexy. This is not a new occurrence.
That "I Dream of Jeannie" costume (and, yes, I remember it well from Halloween) was not nearly as revealing as these costumes and there is a HUGE difference between "sexy" and "skanky"
The costumes we looked at were all basically the same with just different coloring or designs on the costume to differentiate between "Pirate Wench" or "German Beer Maid": Super low cut top where it's all hanging out; skirt cut up to the crotch; fishnet stockings. The models on the cover pics all had super high spike heels or stripper platforms.
Like I said, there is a huge difference between sexy and skanky.

My sister was in elementary school when she wore that costume. Sexy is ok for an 8 year old?
It's been like that for awhile. It's sick. Just go to Goodwill and put together something yourself. Probably cheaper too.
Yes, it has been that way for a while, and many older girls enjoy it, believe it or not. At least, that's what my DD tells me (age 23). DH and I were looking at a costume store (near FlatIrons Mall, maciesmom), and they had all these slutty nurse costumes, which always hacks me off.
Last year, DD wanted to be a "20s Girl", so we looked up costumes on the internet and went to a thrift store to get her a flapper-ish looking dress. It was cute, and cheaper than buying a **** costume.
