My 8 yo (soon to be 9) daughter would like to have an online pen pal. There are many sites out there but I don't how safe they are. Does anyone have any suggestions for safe kids pen pal sites? Thanks in advance.

I recommend asking her english teacher for a recommendation. Schools often have pen pal partnerships with other schools in different areas of the country/world.

I second trying to go through the school. I had 2 penpals for years that way. Also, could you find her a penpal through your friends (maybe they have kids or relatives with kids)? Do you have any extended family around her age that possibly live far away and she doesn't know very well? Just throwing some ideas out there.

I got a penpal in 5th grade through my teacher - the entire class was assigned one. We wrote back and forth for 3-4 years - she lives in Malaysia.

We recently got back in touch through the 'miracle of FB'. It's so cool to reconnect 25 years later and realize how much we influenced each other's lives!

Thanks for the suggestions, all good. We do have friends located through the U.S. but she prefers an international friend. I will talk to her teacher.

Definitely contact your child's school and talk to her English teacher to see if they have that program in place. Schools programs like those are monitored, so you know that it's totally legit. I remember having a pen pal in school during the 3rd grade. I would also recommend coordinating with distant relatives (like same-age cousins) or daughters of old friends to set up a "pen pal" like thing for your daughter. To have your daughter talk to an anonymous pen pal online is just asking for trouble.

Good luck!

One of my pen pals as a kid was the daughter of someone who had been an exchange student in my mom's high school class (my mom had stayed in touch with her). Another was someone I found through something in girl scouts (I don't remember the details - I was about 7). I think we had them for an English class at one point, too.

I haven't had any personal experience with the below site, but it seems good. I think the best way is to contact them directly and also to see if you can get parent reviews. If you do an on-line search for Pen Pal Sites there are plenty.
