My son is 4. And everything in his life begins with "i hate..." or "i dont like..." I personally prefer I dont like. But today, there is a new rule. Hate is no longer a word we are going to say. He is watching tv and there was a "shell phone". He starts laughing and says he hates shell phones. What in the world basis would he have for such strong feeling about a shell phone. He has none. And thus, i know he doesnt know what the word hate means. So he isnt allowed to say it. Curse words are not a big deal at our house. Being afraid of a word gives it power. But hate? Hate has a lot of power on its own. So no more "hate". If he genuinely doesnt like something, he can express that. There are few things in life most people hate. People dislike but dont hate, generally. Hate is a powerful emotion and until he "gets" it, no more hate.
I just recently banned "disgusting" from my 4 year old girl's vocabulary, because everything was disgusting.... She stopped using it pretty quick, I was expecting a fight.
Another word disallowed when my kids were growing up was 'stupid'.
Yup. "Stupid" and "hate" are on our do-not-use list, as well. Generally, I think it's a good thing for kids to develop a large vocabulary of ways to express what they mean (not liking something, not wanting to do something) that is specific and talks about their preference (I don't want to eat carrots now) as opposed to traits of the object (Carrots are stupid).
My best friend's mom's big no-no word was Lie. You had to say fib or story. I never got why lie was such a bad word.
Im from a very old and historic southern family on one side, and my grandmother only uses the word LIE in the most extreme of circumstances. A small child never deliberately lies, they tell stories do to their large imagination or they fib to avoid trouble. But LIE? Never! I always found it peculiar too!
Yep, the word hate should be discouraged. And, they sound so much more articulate when they say, "I dislike...". My daughter at 11, still thinks "stupid" is a curse word. LOL

Stupid may be fast on the heels of hate in terms of being banned. I cant stand it! It makes you look stupid to display so little a vocabulary that you "hate it because its stupid"

Im impressed that she was at least using a more descriptive word.
The other day in the car I said "do you want tacos?" "I dont like tacos" "Yes you do" "Yes I dont!" It was so funny I was laughing probably a bit to hard. Gotta keep the humor right?
