My X insisted one year that I break the news to my daughter about Santa Claus. I was not ready for that and felt she was too young. Can't remember exactly how old, maybe around 8. It was a horrible experience when I did that and regretted it for a long time. Well, she's grown now, she's over it I'm sure and so am I.
My son is 11 soon to be 12. Of course he's figured things out for himself, but I've never enlightened him. So not a problem there. He's a pretty bright detective kind of guy.
I have wondered when or if is the time to tell? I won't have to worry about it for a long time now, but will cross that bridge again one day with my grandbaby.
My Mom and Dad never told us there was no Santa Claus, I am 35 married and have a soon to be 4yrold and my mom still sends a gif to me from Santa. I do not think I will tell my son he is not real, because he can fig. out for him self one day. Besides why kill the magic, everyone no matter how old they are needs some type of magic.

Wasn't worth it. Broke my heart. The x's excuse was she would be the laughing stock at school for still believing. I didn't want that. He was an ass BTW. Left him.
I don't remember being told that Santa isn't real so it must not be true!!!!!
I still send presents to my son from Santa and will do the same for the grandbaby.

I accidently told my son - he knew already - but wasn't ready to "lose the magic" and he was mad - maybe because he still believed in the Easter Bunny - although that didn't make sense to me.....
Our oldest daughter broke my heart when she was 7 - we were in Sam's and I said - well maybe Santa can get you that - Christmas is in a few weeks....she looked at me and said - Mom - I didn't believe last year either. Can you just buy it and I'll pretend to be suprised? I broke down in the middle of Sam's - she was the baby then and i was heart broken. Thank goodness our "baby" is 5 and is a little more niave!
I don't ever remember believing - but we had to keep up the act for my little sis and my Grandma!
Let them in on the secret. Giving a gift as Santa is about giving without expectation or recognition. It's about doing something nice for someone else without expecting a reward or even thanks.
Let your kids get a toy to put in the Toys for Tots box, or if you know a family that is having trouble leave a present on their front porch from Santa for them to discover on Christmas morning. Shift the direction of their faith in Santa from the inward "more presents for me!" focus to a more mature "what can I do for others" focus.
My son is 9.5 years old. I told him today at lunch (after talking about possible Christmas presents) that Santa brings things for little kids but Moms and Dads get presents for bigger ones.
He said, "Okay."
I think he'd like to be 'a baby' forever but that's his personality.
