Last night at 8:30 pm two young women drove up to my house and asked for my daughter by name (she is 14 years old) They identified themselves as missionaries from the Church of Latter Day Saints. At first I was just annoyed and I said No, you can't talk to her, she is a child and they seemed surprised and left in their car. Then I asked some friends about it and they encouraged me to file an incident report with the police because 1. they asked for my child by name and our address and phone number are unlisted, and 2. they were out past 8:30 which is supposed to be their curfew. I am now concerned about maybe identity theft because they seemed to think my daughter was an adult. How do LDS missionaries obtain names and addresses of people they want to visit? I plan on calling the local LDS church to complain today and the police took the report but haven't heard of any other strange incidents but they did seem concerned that they asked for a child by name............any thoughts or suggestions?

They likely got the information off of the internet which often gets ages wrong. Depending on the site you ask I am anywhere from 26-35 xD. In todays day and age there are no longer things such as unlisted anymore.

Is it possible that your daughter had actually requested information about the LDS church? There are places online or on paper where you can tick a box saying you are interested in learning more and they will send missionaries to you. Alternatively, it's also possible that someone else filled out one of these info requests with her name and info as a "prank" of sorts.

Keep a close eye on your daughter these people (LDS) are dangerous . Google the LDS church and how much they illegal stuff they have been involved in and tell your daughter absoloutly no talking to strangers and watch herself coming to and from school . I would have had them wait for the police by telling them she will be right out , and then while they are waiting call the police ...this is no prank and if it is ...someone would get a butt kicking . Good luck . We have to watch our kids like hawks now .

Default called

I called the local mission house and complained and and they referred me to the district leader and he had a very rehearsed answer and claimed my daughter must have filled something out online (My daughter vehemently denies this and truly has no interest whatsover, she likes her Starbucks@ ) The leader said they could not tell me how they got her name so I informed him that I had filed an incident report with the local police and they were to remove any contact info they had on us from their list) and he said he would take care of it. They woke a sleeping bear. The police told me to contact them if they ever come back and they also thought the incident was very strange. BTW, apparently the missionaries are allowed to be out until 9:00pm. I hope this is the last I see of them.

I've never heard of female LDS missionaries or heard of them driving cars.

Is that a recent change?

First off, it's The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Secondly, you are totally over-reacting. Either your daughter requested that the missionaries call on her or else she has Mormon friends who suggested to the missionaries that she might be interested in talking to them. You can rest assured that even if your daughter were to want to join the LDS Church, the LDS Church would refuse to baptize her without your permission. They were not looking to steal her identify or do any harm to her or anyone else.

There is nothing illegal about missionary work and the fact that these two young women knew your daughter's name means nothing more than that they got it from either her or her friends. The LDS missionaries aren't on the lookout for vulnerable young girls. They didn't want to take her out of your home, and if you had let them in, they would have encouraged you to be in the room the entire time they visited with her. They want to teach people who are interested, and they had a perfectly logical reason for thinking your daughter was one of those interested people -- even if you can't pinpoint what that reason was.

When you call the LDS Church to complain, be sure to ask if they have any missionaries available to help you with a project around your house (yard work, etc.). They'll be happy to send a couple of young men over to spend a day working for you free of charge and without any proselytizing whatsoever.

Talk about paranoid, not to mention uninformed! Do you seriously think the Mormon missionaries are thinking about kidnapping this young girl?

(By the way, I noticed on your profile that you're Catholic. That really surprised me. You come across much more like a fundamentalist evangelical Christian than you do a Catholic. Catholics and Mormons generally get along really well.)

There have been female LDS missionaries for years. Today 25% of the Church's missionaries are young women (ages 19 up up). All missionaries do not ride bikes. Depending on the area, they may very well have a car to drive.

If that's the case, I can almost guarantee that she has Mormon friends who gave the missionaries her name. Judging from your reaction, though, if I were your daughter and actually had given the Church my name, I'd be a little bit afraid to admit it to you, too.

What in the world did the police find "very strange" about this incident? It happens hundred of times a day in cities all over the country (well, all over the world, actually).
