Or do you use stories out of a book?

We read books but also we do this pretty regularly..In fact, DH and I sometimes make it a team event and the kids make up different portions of the story.. often to hilarious results.. I think it encourages their imagination. My parents and older siblings did this a lot for me when I was growing up.

I think its pretty common

Both made up stories and those out of a book. I remember some of the stories my mom made up for me when I was a kid.

Both, but my daughter prefers that I make the stories up. If I haven't thought of one, a book will do.

More books than made up stories at bedtime, because I was tired by that point of the day. But we did make up stories sometimes. My son in particular loved that. When he was 5 or 6 years old, they revolved around the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and how they'd come to our house and eat pizza with him. Man, those were the days.... Ten years later, he is not into TMNT nor bedtime stories anymore. Enjoy these days, because they go by very quickly!
