My wife and I have moved to the Raleigh NC area and wonder what is the best route to pull our travel trailer from Michigan--that is avoiding the worse of the mountains.

Are we better off using I-77 through WV or taking the PA turnpike to US 70 south into MD?

THANKS..

From the Ohio line to at least several exits beyond Pittsburgh, The Pa. turnpike is a narrow concrete funnel with no place to pull over, or even get out of the way in case of emergency. I hated driving on it in a car. I couldn't imagine pulling a trailer through that mess.

It has been almost 10 years since we were in Pittsburgh and seem to remember the turnpike being rather narrow...

We are revising our route and looking at I-80 (EAST) to US 15 south into Harrisburg then on into Baltimore to I-95....

THANKS!!

Take I-77; it's relatively new. The Pa. turnpike is older than God, and rides like it.

You don't want to do that, either. Lots and lots and lots of curves and hills. Sometimes you feel like you're screwing yourself into the ground. And trucks. Lots and lots of trucks. I'd take I-75 before I'd take that route.

We have been using I-77 with the moving trailer. We were just hoping to avoid a few of those long climbs in WV. Our truck has 170K miles and thought the fewer hills the better..

My B-N-L came up I-75 last month from FL and said it was construction for MILES and MILES....from Ohio through Georgia....

Sounds like we should stay with I-77..

THANKS for the information....

how about selling the travel trailer and buying a new one instead of hauling it across country? travel trailers are about a dime a dozen these days.

For western PA to NC, I take I-79 into WV, run US 19 south to I-77, then whatever routes I need to get to whatever town in NC. But all the trucks we use are diesels, so hills don't matter.

But I agree with the PA Turnpike haters: Narrow road, tons of traffic crowding you all the time, at least on day shift. But if you travel at night, you could consider the Turnpike. Won't be anything but big trucks out there then.
