The venerable old Hotel Milton in Milton, PA, which shut its doors 15 years ago and has lain vacant since then was recently sold and will re-open shortly as an hispanic community resource center and rooming house. Adalberto and Juanita Santiago originally from Puerto Rico will be the new proprietors.

I remember having an excellent meal there 50 years ago. At that time, Milton was 100% caucasian and 80+% of the population had German or part German lineage. How times have changed.

It looks like a beautiful building that again has an economic use. The Half-King of Shamokin probably was a bit concerned about all those ex-Germans moving in, too.

My guess is that the 100% Caucasian and 80% German/ part-German people abandoned the town and the OP is happy that the beautiful building(s) are being used once again.

He's thanking the Puerto Ricans for reviving his home town.

+1 OP

Can't one engage in a little nostalgia without the implication of something sinister?

It's too bad that the hotel was not purchased by someone who would renovate it for a hotel or B&B. There are no hotels, motels or B&Bs in Milton. People visiting Milton's many industries, commercial establishments or relatives must stay in Lewisburg or New Columbia or Danville or "on the strip in Selinsgrove."

I'm reading an emphasis on race, and I'm not the only one. However, I can see how you would be unhappy that it's not staying a hotel. Community centers can do wonders for a town too though, so perhaps this one will be a real asset.

It took a while, but I found this:

"The most exceptional of the patterned masonry Queen Anne houses is industrialist Charles Godcharles' house, (Hotel Milton) at 101 N. Front Street. This brick patterned-masonry type abounds with stone detailing and textured brick-work. The shaped attic gables have cut stone parapets and the attic story of the corner tower is adorned with carved stone gargoyles; the drains for the first floor porch likewise have a carved animal-head motif. The house is located on a corner lot, exposing its side facade. The eccentric massing and rich texture of this fine house make it a visual bonanza."

Milton Historic District, Milton Borough, Northumberland County, Milton PA 17847

Nice building.

I CAN* agree with you on the -- shame it's not getting reno'd to a B/B. I can NOT agree with your original
injection of race/ethnicity into the mix.

You have not defended it, not that I think you can.....
