As a resident of Long Island who visits and owns property in Pa. I am baffled by the vote. Nationally the country did vote for this "change". My mother and two sisters voted for Obama also. I am a republican and do try to keep an open mind, however I need to vent some thoughts. I have worked hard all my life, starting from grade school I observed people getting free lunch meals while I had a sandwich and was given the treat of ten cents for milk. I had taken a civil service exam and became a police officer. With that career, I was passed over my first two promotional exams because of affirmative action. I finally was promoted when the list became so small on a test, they had no choice. And yes, my first two grades were passing but I never received the call while others who blatently failed were promoted. I have always maintained a positive demeanor. I continued with my studies and obtained a bachelors degree that cost me out of pocket $33,000.00. I have always worked two jobs, my wife who is a school teacher at one point worked three jobs before having children to save to buy our first home. Through the years we were able to buy a second home because of our hard work, we were told we needed a deduction for a writeoff, so we bought this home. We are fortunate because some do not own any homes. I am currently awaiting to retire from my job and am finishing up nursing school to get my degree so after retirement from PD I still have a lucrative job. How do I pay for school?, by working as an aide in a hospital to help pay the bills.
I am not looking or ever looked for a handout. I believe in the harder you work/study the more successful you are. I realize the last few years were not so good economically, however we as people need to strive forward and sacrifice, not be given handouts. Obama's policy of redistribution scares the desire out of me to continue forward. Why should I work harder for those who do not push themselves at all? I see it everyday in NYC. People who receive $700.00 a month per child from the state plus free housing. Their apartments are filled with top of the line furniture and expensive electronics. I cannot afford a newer TV yet these people can. I am not a racist. But trying times call for changes in what type of employment we seek. Too often kids go to school to be "sports managers, or business majors" Gone are the days when people would flock to work any job to pull themselves up.
His new tax policy of "Wealthy Americans" is wrong. Shame on those who are eager for this new "handout" and taking from my pockets. I will still continue on with school, I guess I will have to change my deductions to prevent my monies from being redistributed. We did not vote Mccain Why? Because of Bush? McCain suffered for seven years as a prisoner of war for America because he was an American. Did he not deserve our support????? He was a moderate republican who did not speak of illegal immigration and the cost to our system as a whole, but his heart is IN AMERICA . Palin was a middle income mother with humble beginnings and succeeded on her own WITH NO HANDOUTS FROM ANYONE. Yet we chose this great Aurator of "change". I hope all those who voted will prove me wrong. I have to admit I have this knot in my stomach and it is not a good one.Our country, its values and ethics are dying. School is more concerned with same sex parents than teaching kids history of OUR country, math and the sciences. Sarah Palin hit it on the nose when she said our responsibility as parents is home first. Bush was a patsy for Cheney and their own agenda no doubt. I do not agree with this bailout one bit. Maybe McCain should of voted against it. We are in deep waters. Let me leave you on a note, my neighbors, some who work on wall street continue to spend like there is no tomorrow. This bailout proved wrong. It only helps those who have cheated their way to our money. Bigger taxes are wrong, giving people free money. The middle class is screwed again. God bless our troops and I hope they are kept from harms way. I hope a strong America remains successful and able to provide for my children. I just can't see how people are ashamed of this country for all the good it has done and provided all around the world. I love Pennsylvania nd will continue to spend my monies there, maybe one day permanently moving there. What I love about the state is most of the state is humble with good hard working families and ideas. Lets pray for a stronger tomorrow and encourage your representatives who are in Washington not to change our ethics or way of life. It will destroy us as a nation. There has to be rewards in working hard, being married, and having children not to be punished.

Even though I also voted for Sen. Obama, I'm a fiscal conservative who does not agree with the notion of "redistribution of wealth." The profit motive drives people to become successful. If people knew that once they hit a certain income level that they would be "punished" for doing so, then what incentive would one have to excel in their career path or even choose a lucrative one that is very much required by society (a medical specialist, for example). At age sixteen I demanded that my parents permit me to obtain a job, and I worked nearly full-time as a stock clerk at a grocery store earning $6/hr. for about a year while attending high school until I had finally amassed enough savings to put a nice down payment on a used car---a car that isn't fashionable but is reliable. I feel a sense of pride and worth knowing that I fully paid for my car (my parents co-signed the loan since I was a juvenile, but I made the payments), my insurance, my gasoline, maintenance on the vehicle, etc. Then you have the other teens in my affluent suburb whose parents rushed out and bought them new cars on their 16th birthdays so that they could "show off" their Mustangs, Corvettes, and BMWs at the high school. Why should I be impressed that their parents spoiled them while they slacked off? It was from this young age that I developed the notion that working diligently to afford to purchase things you want in life is preferable from an emotional stand point than just getting things put into your lap.

Default Todays world

We are a society that focuses on entertainment, and fast easy living. I am in awe in the beauty and available land for industry in Pennsylvania. Neither one of these candidates proposed a heavy tax on imported items (including the American companies overseas saving on cheap labor) Forcing them back home. What was interesting (and believe me I am not for it) was when the cost of oil became so high, our country was slowing orders of foreign produced steel (from Japan) because it was cheaper to buy it from here...... Incidentally, Japan buys all of ourscrap metal ,recycles it and sells it back to us.
The one high note I must say , as a result of this election, more people are in tune with today's politics. I hope Obama succeeds in strenthening our country, if not we are at least a little more "awakened" to our everyday political scene.
We need to build our foundation strong again at home. Another difference from Long Island is that the kids out here are definitely alot more arrogant and spoiled on a larger scale than the ones I encountered in Pa. I am sure you have your fair share, however I am always impressed when speaking to young peopl in the NE part of Pa where we visit

I remember about 15 years ago. My husband was going to get a higher position because they thought his last name was a minority name. They had to have X amount of people from another race in those positions. When they learned he was a white caucasian, he no longer was offered the job.
Just as you explained Lisurfer........
We felt bad for awhile. He was the best trained, had the experience........but his race mattered!

Default Race

The more we speak of fairness, the more politically incorrect we are today. Aaarggh! Many of our leaders today need to be reminded wht this country was built on and for!!!!

You're always welcome to relocate here, LI! We have a great deal of Long Island transplants here in NEPA especially.

Then why did you vote for Obama? That is the centerpiece of his platform. Even fast Eddy isn't that liberal.

1) Being a POW makes you as good of a president as much as being a Cashier at walmart makes you a good CEO.
2) I want a VP who is actually capable of leading, not someone who I would have a beer with. I'm voting for a leader, not a companion or friend.
3) What were McCain's plans for the middle class? Maintaining AMT and tax breaks that increase our deficit without fixing our economy?

There is reasoning for Obama's tax policy. Those making 250K are not truly struggling to have a place to live, put food on the table, pay for medicine, or get an education. Sure, there may be difficulty in making car payments on the luxury car or 5 bedroom house, but that's not true struggling. There will always be poor people, since the definition in and of itself is a relative term, so as long as there is capitalism there will always be poor. However, the problem is that those in the middle class and lower are having difficulty having the necessities. The main necessity to progression to a higher class is the ability and availability of an education. Sure, some people may choose not to go, but there are those that are incapable to pay for it.
That is where the tax policy comes in. Those that make more than 250k are able to pay more since they don't have the difficult decision that at least 90% of Americans do. When the top 1% of Americans hold 40% of its wealth, something is fundamentally wrong with the system. The system as it stands punishes the poor and rewards the wealthy. Corporations get to send jobs overseas tax free but are then taxed to bring them back. That is the broken system, one that inhibits economic mobility as opposed to enhancing it. Over the past 20 years, middle income wages have stagnated, while those above 250K have doubled. That isn't fair. The obama tax policy restores some sense of equality.
