Hi,

Family is moving to Danville, just wondering if there are ever any problems or issues with the county jail or the prison hospital? I know it's a small town but still surprised to see the jail is only a block or two from an elementary school...I have read elsewhere that crime is relatively low. Any insights/comments from residents past and present would be most helpful.

Thanks!

By the "prison hospital", do you mean Danville State Hospital? I have a friend who is a pharmacist there and there are no problems there, and certainly none in the community because of it.

Many small towns have their prisons right in the town. They are secure and the children in nearby schools are safe. In the rare case of any incident, the schools go into lockdown mode until everything is clear again. In our community here was an armed robbery a number of years ago. Even though it was downtown, the schools were locked down until the police determined the person had left the area.

Danville is a beautiful, friendly community with good schools. Any issues there, such as the occasional string of burglaries, have nothing to do with the jail (at least until the culprits are caught) or the state hospital.

Thanks for your quick reply--I am used to a more suburban/large city life where you may never have occasion to drive or walk by a jail or prison. Your comments are reassuring.

My dad grew up right across the street (a very narrow street) from the Carbon County Prison in Jim Thorpe. My grandmother was their cook for many years. So it seems perfectly normal to me. I can see how it might be odd to someone from another type of area, though.
