I may have a civilian job offer to work at Letterkenny Army Depot and would have to relocate from western NY. Just wondering about what to expect in Chmabersburg. I hope I spelling it right.

Avergae house prices? Can I get something decent for $100,000 to $120,000? Taxes? Thanks

Default Chambersburg PA

Hi,

My husband's cousin moved there about 2.5 years ago from NJ. They like it there. Housing is affordable, although I'm not sure about the prices, and her husband really likes Gettysburg, which is only about 30 minutes from them. They are about 1.5 hours from Baltimore.

I wish I knew more but hope that helps.

I'm a real estate agent in Chambersburg and happy to provide you with some generalities about the area. The average price for a home in Chambersburg is around 200K. It depends on what your needs are in looking for homes that might be in a better price range for you. Inventory is very high and there are buys to be made. The economy here has been strong. We have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state. We also have enjoyed one of the lowest tax rates in the state over the last five years. Politically, this is a conservative county where Republicans outnumber Democrats 6-1. You might check out the Chamber of Commerce website which is chambersburg.org Letterkenny is well regarded and has survived the BRAC's over the years to pick up work from other depots. Hope that helps you some.

We moved here last year and love it. Some things to know: it's fairly rural. There are lots of manufacturing jobs, Letterkenny jobs, farming. The area is not very diverse, and religion is a bit bigger than in some places. Lots of Mennonites. If you are looking for an exciting night life, you won't find it here. There are good restaurants and bars to go to.

We moved from the Metro DC area and wanted a slower pace. It is smaller and slower than where I grew up in Ohio, though! But we love it and are very glad to have made the move. Good luck with your decision! Oh yeah...my neighbor moved here for a Letterkenny job this past August and they like it too.
