Not everyone has an obituary. They cost money.

Another Op called the ex-spouse and she was told their was no obituary.
That was wrong, if not an intentional fib, as theobituary was found by a simple phone call from me to a helper in the state of CT. You can take someone's word for it that there is no obituary and give up, or keep looking until you have real facts that there was no obit.

What document are you using to verify he is deceased?

He's not on the s.s. death index. Only 30 such names nationwide.

Common reasons for exclusion include the following:
a. The death was not reported to the Social Security Administration (SSA).
b. Death occurred before the Master File was in a computer database in 1962.
c. The person did not participate in the Social Security program.
d. Survivor death benefits were (are) being paid to dependents or spouse.
e. A recent death may not be indexed yet.
f. Human error.
SSDI: Getting Started

A. Usually reported by a family member or the coroner who has the death certificate.
B. This seems to be eliminated.
C. He was just under 63 so he may not have been getting s.s. benefits.
D. Unknown if this might apply.
E. This seems to be eliminated if it's been 8 years.
F. Sad but true in some rare cases.

If you are only 25 miles from the address where he lived in what 2008?
Maybe some weekend, drive up there and knock on doors.
Someone in that neighborhood may be old enough, and lived there long enough to remember something, anything.

$9.00 can get you details you may not have.

Call 215-560-3054, listen to the message and choose #7 to speak to a representative.
They told me all the details the someone's death certificate would contain like cause of death, names of parents, place of burial, name of funeral home, etc.
Calls to the funeral home and cemetery can tell you who paid for his funeral, if there was an obituary or death notice, etc.
-----------
Only certain people can request a death certificate in Pa:
a. Legal representative of decedent's estate
b. Immediate family member
c. Extended family member who indicates a direct relationship to the decedent

You are clearly C.
The fee is $9.00.
Death Certificates (Pa. vital records)

Your search may very well be helped by the death certificate and all the details it contains.
