I do my own. Why not take a stab at it?

If you screw up the IRS will make the deduction from your expected refund and explain to you what happened.

Turbo-tax is very popular but to tell you the truth I do mine on paper.

You get the books at your local library. The forms are inside the books.
You need one for the State and one for the Federal. You have to do the Federal first.

Oh, adding - you're going to need a calculator.

Find out where Mitt Romney has his taxes done! It might be worth it, even if you have to travel a thousand miles to get there!

We've gone to Liberty Tax for years and while they're not cheap, around $250, they've always managed to get us very healthy refunds.

This year it was over $7500.

Oh yeah, we always get free t-shirts too!

Not sure if it's available in your area but you might try your local community college.

Here, they will prepare and e-file your taxes for free if you meet certain income guidelines.

It's at least worth a phone call.

My daughter (18yrs) did hers at HR Block (free federal) and then did her state return herself which I helped her with.

If your return is simple (mortgage, kids, EIC, income, and minor investments) then do it online for free and the best part is HR Block will let you go through with the state to give you an idea of your return (if you have one) and then you can do it yourself and see if you come up with the same refund/owed amount.

^^^ This

If they are simple, do them for free with one of the online programs, then instead of paying the fee to complete the process and file, just do them yourself on paper and see if the numbers match.

If they are not simple, it is worth paying a few dollars to go see a tax professional and have them help you get it right.
