I was in Starbucks yesterday just reading (a technology magazine) and relaxing, this guy came over and said to me "I noticed that you were reading about web companies..."
At first I just thought he was making conversation, so I was polite, but then he tried to sell me Quixtar! (i.e. same thing as Amway, the pyramid scheme). Jeez, I really felt bad for the guy...he was obviously already brainwashed by this thing.
I was wondering if anyone else has been approached by Amway/Quixtar-peddling "business owners" trying to get you to join their scheme/cult?
Wow, Calmdude thanks for linking to that other thread...insane! I had no idea that it was that widespread.
What baffles me is that so many people can be caught up in a scam like this. I knew there were a few crazy people out there, but this thing is prob 100,000 people or more!
btw, the funniest part of his pitch was when he showed me the brochure. It had a subtitle that said "Powered by a Business System." Now that is impressively vague
Hopefully these folks will get a clue, but unfortunately it seems that the only way people get out of it is by losing a bunch of money...and even worse, losing friends + family that they have roped in too.
I have a couple of friends who're always talking about Arbonne and trying to get me into it. What annoys me the most is that most of the time they're not trying to sell me a product itself, but are trying to get me to sell Arbonne. That to me is a big red flag- MLM sucks
Amway was recruiting at my school when I graduated (engineering). Looking for folks to run the plants and make soap etc. I think they had a tough time getting folks cause of the benefit pkg.
Not familiar with the Amway/Quixstar scheme but I have a guy that is always talking up this Tahitian Noni Juice or something like that. Its one of those exotic berry drinks that cures cancer and crap like that. He tries to get me to buy into its pyramid scheme set up all the time as he talks about his meetings and trips to Vegas and Hawaii to meet other nut jobs.
