I'm planning to move out of the country in July permanently, but how will I file my taxes for the year 2014 if I worked from January to June 2014. This is so confusing for me. Will the government know I moved out of the country?

File just like you would living in the USA.

Use you new address......

Yes, the government will know when you leave.

You will need a passport.

A lot of expats seem to use TurboTax online and in some countries where there are US Embassies the US Embassy may be able to help you file your taxes.

Also you might wish to read this U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad since it appears you can freefile online at that link if you made less than $57,000 according to that page.

Next, do not count on the IRS knowing you moved abroad since no one stamps your passport when you leave, only when you return, yet airlines do report to TSA who is getting on flights but does TSA report that to the IRS, I doubt it.

My advice would be to make sure the govt owes you money and then you would be safe even if you need to file an extension or be late, this can be done by having your employer take out the max tax claiming 0 exemptions and if necessary filing quarterly estimates if you have other income, you should have an idea based on last years taxes whether they owed you or you owed them and if all basically remains the same.

Last you might wish to go to the World Forum section on this forum and ask US citizens in those countries how they do it for even more peace of mind.

One more thing, if you can have a US address to get all your tax forms and then have the person who receives it scan and email it to you, then you would have a better chance of getting the necessary forms on time, whereas some countries mail systems are hit and miss.

If you have no one who can do that for you then there is a forwarding service called USA BOX in Miami that I know some expats use and I am sure there are some others (you could find by doing a search) who could ship you your mail for a fee.

Good luck in your new adventure.

If nothing else, locate a local DHL office overseas and mail your return from there. That's what I did one time. It worked well.

Can't you just get the online TAX Forms by pdf? - I do that for myself. There is online filing but I don't know how to do that.

Just use turbotax online.... Are you filing a 1040 EZ or itemizing? Both are quite simple.

I will have my w2 sent to my parents home so I guess I shouldn't worry. I guess they can mail it to my new address or do what you suggested scanning it. Thanks you

I think it's just a 1040. I don't have any itemizations. I'll look into that too. Thanks
