As an alternative to getting a long term roommate, I've been thinking about renting out my second bedroom on Airbnb. It's small and is currently empty with the exception a few boxed a never unpacked. I did a search on their site and see similar rooms within a few blocks of my address going for $40-$70 a night.
Anyone rent out a room in their place on airbnb or a similar site? Do you make decent 'extra cash' by using this as a side gig?
To rent it out, you would have to buy furnishings, right?
Is spending money furnishing to room, probably providing snacks and/or breakfast, and losing your privacy worth $40 a night?
It has been suggested to me that I should rent out on airbnb, but DH and I decided that the lack of privacy isn't worth it.

I don't know...that's what I'm trying to determine. Between IKEA/Craigslist, the furnishings wouldn't be a big deal.
I 'think' I could deal with it since it's temporary and it seems like a better idea than getting a permanent roommate, but I'd like to hear about other peoples' experiences.
I have really, really considered it, especially after we became minimalists and got rid of our valuables (I only have 1 ring, 1 set of earrings and 1 necklace... all worth less than $20).
There are only 2 issues that have stopped me... 1) we have cats 2) the shower in the master bath really needs to be replaced due to breaks in the grout and mildew in the silicon seal between the shower pan and the shower stall. If it weren't for these two issues we'd have a great clean and tidy 4 bedroom home to offer for super cheap in a desirable area.
I have a buddy (actually a couple) that does it here in Austin and swears by AirBNB. Out of a few hundred times, they have only had 1 or 2 "oddballs" over the past couple of years.
A few weeks ago, they brought out the "renter" to hang out with us - the renter was in town for a funeral but couldn't locate any hotels that had vacancies during Formula One. He had a great time and probably made new friends.
There's also apparently a system wherein hosts and users can rate one another. You can check that out first.
My daughter, who lives in Beijing, went to Hong Kong over the holidays and used airbnb for her stay. Turns out the host was an American living in Hong Kong for his job, but he is from NJ, about ten miles from where I live. Small world. She met a few others who were staying at the same place, and it was a good experience.

My sister recently got one in manhattan for $350 a night which was still substantially cheaper than a hotel. I guess depends on your location, hotel costs in your area etc but it can actually be pretty lucrative. there's actually people who buy places specifically to use as AirBNB busineses.

IDK... I have stayed cheaper in Manhattan.
Even the Renaissance on 57th can be gotten for under $200
Courtyard New York Manhattan/Upper East Side for under $150
Good for that airbnb person to be able to find someone willing to pay their price!
I said $40 in my post as the OP said their area is in the range of $40 to 70 and that the space was small.
