Can think of wise crack answers but this is a serious question. The spouse dies without assets left and kids refuse to help out, for example. Suggestions?

Reason: typo
Try the Neptune Society they will possibly allow you to make payments. If the spose was in the service the VA
may be an option. You can donate the cadaver to a Medical college for dissection or skeleton conversion if
the cadaver is refrigerated presently.
You can also just leave the body until the state takes possession and disposes of it by burial or cremation according to their state laws. Have a ceremony but without a body.

Yeah. I can't imagine them leaving a body sitting forever. Can't imagine the state not doing a proper burial or cremation either.

Sadly, there is a charitable organization that provides respectful funerals for bodies that the families did not claim, were cremated by the county, and sat for sometime years at the county coroner's office. They only open up a branch in an area where this happens, so I guess some counties do take care of their own.

Thank you for the reminder about Neptune; had heard about it and will follow up for more information. Excellent replies to my post and all are appreciated. This woman wants to hold onto the remains of her husband and would not consider donating his body to a medical center but this is an excellent suggestion for others who read these posts. The man is not retired military.
If the spouse is a veteran, it might be worth checking to see if there are assistance programs for veteran burials.
The VA will take care of all expenses after you arrive at the gate of the cemetery. A casket can be a cardboard box, no embalming is necessary.
I am not sure if they take care of cremation.
