I have one specific 401K in which I am not fully vested. There is a sizable difference between the Vested Balance and the account's actual balance. For example: $80,000 fully vested but the 401K account has a balance of $100,000.
Question One: If I were eligible to start making withdrawals today, what happens to this $20,000?
Question Two: If I were to roll this 401K into another of my 401K account, is only the vested balance is transferred? And, if I roll the funds, what happens to the $20,000?
Correct, the financial company that handles your employers 401k will know to returnthe non vested balance back to your ex employer. The $ you put in you are always 100% vested.
