Didn't file an extension just kept forgetting. Will be owed a couple hundred each by state and fed.

People are always telling me to use t tax or one of those programs. Since I'm late should I try that or just take them in so I get a pro stamp on there ?

I don't think HR Block is any better than Turbo Tax. Last time I used them, I disagreed with an HR Block tax preparer over something on my taxes and it turned out I was right. Lost all confidence in them.

If you really want a pro, bring your taxes to a CPA who does taxes. Otherwise use TT. At least, that's what I'd see my chooses as being if I were in your shoes.

Just send it in. They will tell you how much you owe in terms of penalty.

No penalty if he is getting a refund. Penalties are assessed only if you owe.

I should add that I use TT. They will walk you through each step and it's hard to make a mistake because they flag it. I highly recommend it for your average personal tax return.

I used Turbo Tax for years, but the price keeps going up and up. Last year I used TaxAct, which is almost the same as Turbo Tax but the graphics are not as nice. It came to the exact same return amount, but Tax Act cost me $30 (I'm a small business owner) rather than almost $100 for TurboTax.

Try it out. It is free until you want to file.

You are right. I misread it. I thought OP owes tax.

Never use H&R Block. They are not professionals, they are just people who took a class using a similar software package to TurboTax. The IRS website can link you to free tax software for simple returns. (Not sure how this works for previous years).

Most of them can do returns back several years both for people who didn't file and for amended returns. It's not any harder than doing the current year's return. The only thing that's different is the penalty which the IRS will calculate for you which is what I'd recommend. When I've missed quarterlies, I just let them calculate it. I have a rough idea of what the penalty is and it's always been about what I expected.

I've found Turbo Tax is easier and better than taking it to H & R Block or a similar type place. If your taxes are complex you can use a CPA but you will pay a lot more.
