Haha...yes, surveys CAN be valid. But they are only as representative as the frame of the survey... I guess the OP ONLY wants to generalize to people active in the c-d personal finance forum? That should be VERY useful! Pray tell, what journal do you think will accept this? I'll take a response from either the OP or from you, DPPhD.
If you actually read the post, it says that this poll is "unlikely to be useful for most academic research". Which means that it will not be published in a reputable journal.
Not sure why you think a journal will accept this. I can only imagine that is why you're trying to find which one.
I think the more interesting poll would be a How Much does your household SPEND, but then there is going to be the usual City Data debate over whether investments and money saved count as spending.
Seriously people, a poll is reasonably simple and doesn't require a lot of debate.
Just because a poll is easy to answer (this one isn't because there are gaps) doesn't mean it is in any way interpretable or meaningful....
Actually, I was intrigued by the poll results so far, If you go over to CD's Employment forum, everyone on that board toils under the whip of some unappreciated master for only $200 a week and a bowl of soup at christmas. At least of this board, many are earning decent wages. Fascinating.
I answered honestly, but my COLA index is 132. (152 for housing)
Ours is total of 92 and housing of 77.

We will spend about $64k this year for a family of 3 and that includes mortgage, car payments, and daycare for an infant. However, I only track actual expenses so this doesn't include taxes. It includes money that leaves our account in the form of payment. I also count the entire payment as an expense whether it pays off some principal or not. I want to get an idea of how much it would cost us to live.
I answered honestly in the singles poll. My COLA is 140 and it's 226 for housing. My salary is higher than than the average middle class, but low for my area. Someday, I'll move. Really want to move back to a rural area sometime after my job goes telecommute!
Looks like we are in the same area. Hello neighbor!
