Anyone used Direct Pay? Is it what I think it is? You just make a lump sum payment to go toward your 2017 tax bill. I don't want to go through estimated tax calculation now. It's a lot of work and I don't mind paying a little more now. Is the payment properly posted to your "account?" What proof do you need you made the payment when you file your 2017 return?

I use direct pay for my quarterly payments. No problems so far. It shows up on my checking account as IRS USATAXPYMT with our names and also shows the confirmation number for the transaction. When I file my taxes on Turbo Tax, I just put in the total estimated payments that I have made throughout the year.

So I can just send them a check with no forms or anything?

If you want to do it by mail, you can download the form from the IRS website. After I sent in my first one, they then sent me the preprinted forms to do it each quarter. But I have now switched to doing it online, as I found that even easier.

Regardless of payment method ( mail, on-line, etc), is it OK to send 1 lump sum to cover the year; or do you still have to follow the "Quarterly Estimate" process ?

I started the process to see how far it goes. It asks for your identity and matches it up with your 2016 return. Apparently, it found mine and was ready to accept payment. There were no forms involved, at least not up to that point. Just send them money.

Not for a check. On a check make sure you put your SS#, tax you are paying, and year. Best to use a form so they can properly post your payment.
